Superbowl Recap

Superbowl+Recap

On February 1st, 2015, the defending champions, the Seattle Seahawks, faced off against the New England Patriots in Superbowl 49. The Seahawks defeated the Green Bay Packers in an overtime showdown in Seattle, and the Patriots had no trouble getting past the Indianapolis Colts to help them appear in their eighth Super bowl. Looking at how these two teams matched up, some believed that this would be one of the greatest Super bowl clashes in the modern era. The Seattle Seahawks, a defensive-minded team, looked to try and stop the all-star quarterback of the New England Patriots, Tom Brady, in his quest for his fourth Superbowl ring. The Patriots were twice denied the Vince Lombardi Trophy, but eager fans wondered, would this third time be a charm?

At halftime, the score was all knotted up: 14-14. The Seattle Seahawks’ kicker, Steven Hauschka, kicked a short field goal to give them a three-point lead. Not long after, the Seahawks capitalized on a Tom Brady interception, by putting another seven points on the scoreboard. As it started to turn for the worse for the Patriots, they showed life in the fourth quarter. Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to receivers Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola. On the touchdown pass to Danny Amendola, Brady broke Joe Montana’s Super Bowl touchdown record of eleven touchdown passes. Although the Patriots only left the Seahawks with less than a minute to drive down the field and score a touchdown, Seattle had proved worthy of the task and was able to move the ball into the five-yard line of the Patriots. However, Seattle could not capitalize this final time. With less than thirty seconds left on the clock, the Seahawks made perhaps the single most controversial play call in the history of the NFL. Instead of running the ball with the dominant Marshawn Lynch out of the backfield, Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson, tried to throw a pass over the middle, only to find it intercepted by rookie cornerback, Malcom Butler. Seahawks fans in the University of Phoenix Stadium were appalled. Was it the worst play call of all time? Most say yes; however, Patriots fans will not complain about it. New England took a knee to end the game, with a final score of 28-24, capturing their fourth Super bowl title.
