The Technological Terrors

The+Technological+Terrors

The Technological Terrors are revved up and ready to go! In collaboration with Eastern Millwork Inc., Beyer Blinder Belle, and Stevens Institute of Technology, a group of Prep students and teachers have formed the FIRST Robotics Team for the 2014-2015 season. As of November 14, 2014, the Technological Terrors were chosen to receive grants from NASA, FIRST, and 3D Systems. Lead by founders Kyle Smith ‘15 and Bennett Wong ‘15, the Robotics Team has been preparing for a number of competitions around the tri-state area, and possibly the world. FIRST is an American based, nonprofit organization which holds various scientific and technological programs for students K-12.

Robotics 2St. Peter’s Technological Terrors Team 5438, is enrolled in the FIRST Robotics Competition, FRC. Referred to as a varsity Sport for the Mind™, FRC combines the team and excitement aspect of sports with the academic challenges of science and technology. Specifically for grades 9-12, FRC teams must design, build, and program in just six weeks. The Technological Terrors are already ahead of the game. NASA has provided this team with $6,000 to be used over the next two years, and the team won a new EKOCYCLE 3D printer from a grant offered by 3D Systems. The team currently has 36 students promising a bright glimpse of the future with twenty underclassmen. The team also has support from local organizations, namely Eastern Millwork Inc., Steven’s Institute of Technology, and Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners. These organizations provide funding and expertise for this up-and-coming team. The Terrors have already participated in many workshops, preparing them for the rigors of the build period in January. There has never been a FRC team in Jersey City before, and the Technological Terrors of St. Peter’s Prep are blazing the trail for all youth interested in science and technology.
