The Top 5 Best Super Bowl Commercials of 2015

On the biggest sporting night in America, companies ready up their best advertisements to an audience of 120 million. With a sales rate of $4.5 million for 30 seconds, corporations called the very best and brightest creative minds to create a commercial that will leave a lasting impression with viewers and lead them to buy the product. Here at the Petroc, we counted down the top 5. As with all countdowns, this is an opinionated ranking. Although the Snickers “Brady Bunch” commercial has been featured on most other rankings, the show was simply ahead of my time, so it receives an honorable mention. So let’s get started!

5. To kick things off, we have the 2 Esurance “sorta you isn’t you” commercials featuring Walter White (Breaking Bad) playing a pharmacist and Lindsay Lohan playing a mom. The ironic roles for these two infamous people were clever, earning it a place on the countdown.

4. Next in the countdown comes BMW’s commercial featuring former Today Show hosts Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric discussing the “@” symbol. This commercial could have easily been placed off the list, but the boldness of the hosts to play that extremely embarrassing footage gives them extra points: “What is internet anyway?” Hilarious. Well done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBXCW-l8oYw

3. The Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” commercial easily got the most laughs out of me and my fellow teenagers. The man’s reaction to the baby was priceless. However, this countdown entails more than just humor, which is why it only comes in at number 3. Doritos Super Bowl commercials have historically been very entertaining, and this one lived up to expectations. On a side note to Doritos, the “When Pigs Fly” commercial idea was never really funny and has been worn out so much that any new spin on it just devalues the creativity. Luckily for Doritos, their sales are still phenomenal.

2. Coming in at number 2, we have the Budweiser “Best Buds” advertisement. It would be very difficult to have a Super Bowl commercial countdown without including any sort of advertising for alcoholic beverages, so here it is. The cute little puppy touched the hearts of America and the highlight on companionship should be relatable to Prep students. Also, extra points for thinking outside the box and not having a beer commercial with loud music.

1. And finally, at number 1, the moment you have all been waiting for, comes the Clash of Clans “Revenge” commercial. Clash of Clans, currently the most successful gaming app of its kind, has been spitting out clever, entertaining commercials. This one was no different. Liam Neeson was captivating and put a playful twist on his famous “I will find you, and I will kill you” line. The coffee shop employee at the end was a nice touch for some humor as well. Clash of Clans reminds us that it is not necessary to throw an uninterested, out-of-place Kate Upton in your face to grab your attention, *cough* Game of War *cough*. This commercial embodied every aspect of this countdown’s necessary qualities, making it a deserving number 1.
